Removal & Transportation Of 5MW Biomass CHP Power Plant For Reinstallation In Eastern Europe

Project Background and Description

A well-known multinational beverage company no longer required a 5MW Biomass CHP plant in the Yorkshire area of the UK. The main surplus assets were a Wartsila BP5 BioGrate Boiler, Triveni Steam Turbine, AVK DIG 150 11Kv Generator, Portasilo Fuel Feed System and all associated equipment. The entire plant was sold for re-use and required the sympathetically and timely dismantling, removal, packing and shipping to Eastern Europe. As an Approved Contractor, Indassol Engineering Services were assigned to carry the role as Principal and Lead Contractor for the project.

Project Scope

The project scope covered all Health, Safety, Environmental and project documentation, site setup and the entire structured dismantling & removal of the 5MW Biomass CHP Power Plant, packaging and transporting to Eastern Europe. The assets were within a live, fully operational food & beverage site, therefore food hygiene precautions and work coordination with site operations was essential to avoid the potential of costly site production disruption. This was done by ensuring effective and regular and effective coordination and accurate scheduling of dismantling and removal activities. The project structure, documentation and Engineering involved in the methodical, dismantling and removal was to ensure ease of re-installation, commissioning and full operation at the new asset owner’s premises in Eastern Europe.

Key Requirements & Deliverables

The main requirements and deliverables for this project were:

  • To ensure all works were carried out safely, in a professional manner, without any ‘Lost Time Incidents’
  • To avoid any adverse impact to the food & beverage live site operations, both logistically and environmentally.
  • To avoid any adverse impact on the general public when using public roads to transport assets or oversized bulk items from site.
  • To avoid any impact on the wider Food & Beverage site of any dust, chemical or discharges to drainage.
  • To identify, mark & tag all equipment in a manner that will easily allow for subsequent re-installation
  • To dismantle equipment using Engineering good practice, ensuring transportable sections, which facilitate easy road transportation to and re-assembly in Eastern Europe.
  • To reinstate the site area to a safe, clean and reusable area following asset removal works.

Methodology

The project was structured from the beginning to ensure that it met all the requirements of all stakeholders, the site & asset owner and the new asset buyer. Scheduling activities to quickly deliver a clean reusable area for the site owner and a removal schedule which also met with the asset buyers re-installation activities.

A systematic approach was initiated ensuring:

  • Effective Health & Safety management from the start and maintained throughout the project.
  • All equipment including cabling, were recorded, marked and tagged before any intrusive work was carried out.
  • Assets were dismantled in a structured manner using recognised Engineering good practice, ensuring subsequent transporting and re-installation ease.
  • Scheduling of activities to ensure efficient operation whilst minimising disruption to the surrounding site and wider area.

Project Duration

The project duration was 7 months, including project documentation, Health & Safety preparation, site setup, marking & tagging, dismantling, removal, packing and loading to transport of all assets and equipment. This also included the subsequent reinstatement of the site to a clean, safe base level to the satisfaction of the site owner’s future requirements for the site.

Achievements

Having successfully dismantled, removed and transported the entire 5MW Biomass CHP plant without any Lost Time Injuries (LTI) after 7 months of site operations.

Successfully dismantled the Wartsila BP5 BioGrate Boiler into transportable and easily reassembled sections which were successfully re-built at new site location.

All equipment arrived at its 1700 mile destination, was identified and re-installed and is now operating and generating power again in Eastern Europe.

Carried out all activities without disruption to the wider operational production site or surrounding public areas, some of which were in very close proximity to the operational areas.

Following Biomass Plant & equipment removal, we reinstated the site area to a safe, clean and reusable area to the complete satisfaction of the site owner.
