Removal & Transportation Of 5MW Biomass CHP Power Plant For Reinstallation In Eastern Europe
Project Background and Description
A well-known multinational beverage company based in the midlands area of the UK, wanted to realise the value in their assets that were no longer required for production activities. These assets were acquired and sold by our partner company Indassol (Industrial Asset Solutions). The 72,000 can/hr Krone canning and Kettner palletising conveyor line was sold for future reinstallation and reuse. These assets required dismantling & removing within a very tight timescale and within a fully operational food & beverage site. As an Approved Contractor, Indassol Engineering were assigned the role of Lead Contractor for the project, acting under the site incumbent Principal Contractor.
Project Scope
The project scope covered Indassol Engineering providing H&S and RAMS documentation supporting the entire dismantling & removal of the 72,000 can/hr canning and palletising conveyor line, packaging, containerising and transporting from site. The building was to be soft stripped so that only the building structure, offices and building services were to remain in situ.
The primary assets consisted of a 72,000 can/hr Krone filler, Kettner De-Palletiser & Palletiser, Sander-Hansen Pasteuriser, Ferrum Can Seamer and the associated control cabinets, vessels, conveyors, QC inspection equipment. This canning line was located at ground floor and across several mezzanine levels.
All assets were within a live, fully operational food & beverage site, therefore work coordination with the site operators was essential to avoid any costly site production disruption. Some dismantling activities could only take place during production shutdowns or cleaning cycles.
Key Requirements & Deliverables
The main requirements and deliverables for this project were:
- To ensure all works were carried out safely, in a professional manner, without any ‘Lost Time Incidents’
- To avoid any adverse impact to the food & beverage live site operations, both logistically and environmentally.
- To avoid any impact on the wider Food & Beverage site of any dust, chemical or discharges to drainage.
- To identify, mark & tag all equipment in a manner that would easily allow for subsequent re-installation
- To dismantle equipment using Engineering good practice, ensuring transportable sections, which facilitate easy road transportation from site and subsequent transport and re-assembly at the buyers chosen destination.
- To reinstate the site area to a safe, clean and reusable area following asset removal works.
Methodology
The project was structured from the beginning to ensure that it met all the requirements of stakeholders, the site & asset owner and the new asset buyer. Scheduling activities to quickly deliver a clean reusable area for the site owner and a removal schedule which met the strict timescales required for future area use.
A systematic approach was initiated from the project preparation stage ensuring:
- Effective Health & Safety management from the start, maintained throughout the project.
- All equipment was recorded, marked and tagged before any intrusive work was carried out.
- Assets were dismantled in a structured manner using recognised Engineering good practice.
- Scheduling of activities to ensure efficient operation whilst minimising disruption to the surrounding site and wider area.
- All equipment was containerised, with the bulk items being packed in seaworthy crates.
Project Duration
The total project duration was 9 weeks, including project documentation, Health & Safety preparation, marking & tagging, dismantling, removal and loading to transport of all assets and equipment. This also included the subsequent reinstatement of the site to a clean, safe area satisfying the site owner’s future requirements for the site.
Achievements
Having successfully dismantled, removed and transported the 72,000 can/hr canning and packing conveyor line assets without any Lost Time Injuries (LTI) after 9 weeks of busy site operations.
Meeting the very tight removal timescales required by the site owner, without incurring any contractual overrun penalties.
Minimising impact to live production site operations when deploying cranes, containers and asset removals in very close proximity to the main site HGV access/egress roads.
Careful dismantling & removal activities within a live food & beverage area with stringent precautions to protect the integrity of existing live operational canning activities.
Following removal, reinstated the site area to a safe, clean and reusable area to the complete satisfaction of the site owner.
